About the course

GUIDED PERMACULTURE DESIGN CERTIFICATE (PDC): 8 WEEK ONLINE COURSE

The Guided Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) at Aanandaa Permaculture Academy is a structured 8-week online Permaculture Design Course, designed for anyone who wants to learn permaculture deeply and apply it confidently to real land.

Fully compliant with the Bill Mollison 72-hour International Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) curriculum, this program combines the flexibility of self-paced online learning with the accountability of a guided cohort.

There are no fixed class timings. Instead, each Monday a new week's curriculum opens on the academy portal, allowing you to learn at your own pace while progressing alongside your cohort. Throughout the course, you'll receive weekly instructions, assignments, project milestones, and personalised feedback on your final design project.

This course is ideal for homeowners, farmers, architects, landscape designers, educators, environmental professionals, and anyone interested in regenerative agriculture, sustainable living, ecological design, or creating resilient human settlements.

Rather than simply watching videos, you'll actively apply what you learn to a site of your own choosing. By the end of the course, you'll have developed a complete permaculture design based on real-world observation, analysis and design thinking.

What You'll Learn

Each week builds upon the previous one, taking you through the complete permaculture design process.

Week 1: Foundations of Permaculture & Systems Thinking

Begin by understanding the ethics and principles of permaculture, learning from natural systems, recognising ecological patterns, and developing the observation skills that underpin good design. You'll also begin studying your chosen site and its broader geographical and climatic context.

Week 2: Understanding Land, Context & Climate

Learn how to read a landscape through mapping and analysis. Create a base map, identify sectors, analyse microclimates, and understand how sunlight, wind, slope and surrounding influences shape your design decisions.

Week 3: Water in the Landscape

Discover how water moves through landscapes and how thoughtful design can slow, spread and sink rainfall into the soil. You'll study watersheds, rainwater harvesting, earthworks, swales, ponds and water budgeting while adding a complete water layer to your design.

Week 4: Understanding & Building Soil

Explore soil as a living ecosystem. Learn about soil physics, biology and chemistry, conduct simple field tests, understand the soil food web, and develop practical strategies to regenerate soil fertility and health.

Week 5: The Permaculture Design Process

Bring together everything you've learned so far. Develop conceptual designs using zones, sectors, access planning and climate-responsive design strategies while creating your first integrated design proposal.

Week 6: Designing Productive Systems: Plants & Animals

Design diverse and resilient productive landscapes using food forests, plant guilds, orchards and agroforestry systems. Learn how thoughtfully integrated animals contribute to fertility, productivity and ecological balance while planning implementation phases for your site.

Week 7: Human Habitats, Energy & Urban Permaculture

Apply permaculture principles to buildings and human settlements. Design integrated water, energy and waste systems, explore passive solar principles, sustainable building concepts, and learn how permaculture can be applied in both rural and urban environments.

Week 8: Social Design & Final Permaculture Project

Complete your learning by exploring the social and economic dimensions of permaculture, ethical teaching, community resilience and invisible structures. You'll then integrate all your work into a complete Permaculture Design Project for your chosen site.

Learn by Designing a Real Site

Throughout the course you'll progressively build your own permaculture design portfolio by:

Selecting and observing a real site

Creating base maps and design overlays

Analysing climate, sectors and microclimates

Mapping water movement and watershed patterns

Assessing soils and developing regeneration strategies

Designing planting systems and food forests

Planning access, infrastructure and built environments

Integrating water, energy, animals and people into one cohesive design

By the end of the program, you'll have a practical, site-specific permaculture design that reflects everything you've learned during the course.

Earn Your International Permaculture Design Certificate

Upon successful submission and review of your Final Design Project, you'll receive the Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) from Aanandaa Permaculture Academy, fully compliant with the internationally recognised Bill Mollison 72-hour Permaculture Design Curriculum.

Whether you dream of regenerating a farm, designing a homestead, building a food forest, creating an eco-community, or simply understanding how nature works, this course provides the knowledge, confidence and practical framework to begin.
